The ultimate guide to scooter rental in Chiang Mai (without getting burned)

Renting a scooter in Chiang Mai is the best way to explore the city. It gives you freedom, flexibility, and a ton of fun — but only if you avoid the common pitfalls. Here’s everything you need to know before hitting the road.

1. Don’t Leave Your Passport

A lot of shops will ask to keep your passport as a deposit. Don’t do it. It might be common, but it’s illegal — and more importantly, risky. You never know when you might suddenly need your passport (hospital visit, police check, flight, etc.). A copy is fine, and most legit shops will accept a cash deposit instead.

2. Know What’s Included in the Price

Some shops might advertise a cheap daily rate, but then surprise you with extra charges — even for basics like helmets or a phone holder. Always ask in advance so you’re not caught off guard. 3. Always Inspect the Scooter

Before you ride off, someone from the shop should walk around the scooter with you and point out any scratches or damage. 4. Fuel Tips

Most scooters use 95 petrol. Don’t fill up with 91 unless the shop says it’s okay. Fuel stations are easy to find in the city — but if you plan to ride into the mountains, top up first. Just for reference: our models go roughly 250–400 km on a full tank, depending on the engine.

5. Check the Condition

Not all scooters for rent in Chiang Mai are in top shape — some are years old and barely maintained. Before you ride, check the brakes, lights, tires, and mirrors.

6. Understand Insurance

Every scooter comes with the compulsory insurance required by law. It covers medical expenses for both the rider and the passenger, up to 30,000 THB per person — but it can only be claimed if you were riding with a valid driving licence (an IDP or a Thai licence).

For real peace of mind you can add our optional all-risk insurance for a small surcharge. It covers the scooter itself — accident damage, theft, collisions with animals and vandalism — so your liability is capped at the deposit amount. All-risk also requires a valid licence (IDP or Thai), which we check when we hand the bike over.

7. What Happens If You Get Pulled Over

If you don’t have a valid motorcycle license, you’ll get a fine of 500 THB. The police will issue a receipt, which acts as a 3-day pass — you won’t be fined again during that time even if you get stopped.

8. Drive Like Your Life Depends On It

Because it does. Thailand has one of the highest motorcycle accident rates in the world — over 15,000 riders die every year. Always wear a helmet, drive on the left, and don’t assume other drivers will follow the rules. Stay alert, be visible, and ride defensively — especially at intersections and when passing cars.
